STEM Nova Awards

Nova Awards Overview

The Nova Awards program, developed by the Boy Scouts of America, aims to ignite a sense of wonder in Scouts through STEM exploration. Scouts work with a registered Nova counselor or mentor to engage with basic STEM principles and discover their fascination with these fields.

Types of Awards

  • Nova Awards
    • Purpose: Introduce Scouts to basic STEM concepts.
    • Requirements: Scouts can complete these awards with guidance from a registered Nova counselor. The completed award must be logged in Scoutbook Plus or Scoutbook.
    • Recognition: Upon earning their first Nova award, Scouts receive a Nova Emblem. Subsequent awards are recognized with a Pi pin.
    • Purchase: Nova Award patches and pins are available from Class B and Crown Awards.
  • Supernova Awards
    • Purpose: For Scouts seeking advanced challenges in STEM.
    • Requirements: Complete the Supernova Award Application, obtain required signatures, and submit to the council service center.
    • Review Process: Applications are reviewed by the Council Supernova Coordinator and may take up to 45 days (Cub Scouts) or 60 days (Scouts BSA and Venturers). Submit a copy of the advancement report and supporting documentation, such as project data, experiment photos, and workbooks.
