Message from Council Camping Chairman
If you or the other members of your Scouting Unit have not yet signed up to attend summer camp this year, I’d like to encourage you to register for summer camp. We are blessed as a council to have excellent camping facilities, from our air-conditioned dining hall offering tasty and nutritious meals to our crystal clear swimming pool where everyone flocks to cool off on a hot summer day. These are just a few of the many reasons why your Scout should attend summer camp.
For the past two years, I have been part of a team that meets with all parents and leaders during their summer camp stay. The goal is to learn what we are doing well, how we can improve, and to address any immediate concerns of our campers. The most frequent comments are how impressed the leaders and Scouts are with our facilities, programs, and most importantly, our staff. I can share many comments ranging from how our aquatics team helped overcome a Scout’s fear of water, to how the staff went out of their way to make their time at camp an experience of a lifetime. Our camps are safe, well maintained, with an experienced staff ready to have fun. It’s not surprising that our camps always receive the highest possible A rating by the National Camp Inspection team.
Summer camp offers a lot of advancement opportunities for your Scout to earn in a short amount of time. After camp, your Scout will have a number of new awards on their uniform reminding them of their successes and exciting challenges they conquered. As a parent, you will get to see and take pride in their successes and watch their smiles as they share their experiences with you.
The quote from the 1956 The Walter Hagen Story “You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry, don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way.” applies to why your family should consider attending one of our summer programs. Spending quality time together in camp or maybe around a campfire will create those memories you both will cherish for the rest of your lives.
