Joe Robinson joined the Executive Board of the New Birth of Freedom Council in 2016. Since joining the Board, Joe has served with distinction as Keystone Capital District’s nominating committee chair, leading efforts to continuously improve the quality and depth of volunteers serving at the district level.
Joe has also served as the chair of the Harrisburg Breakfast for the past eight years. This important fundraising event for the Council raised more than $56,000 (125% of the event’s goal) for Scouting in 2023.
An author, motivational speaker, and real-world leader, Joe served as Executive Director of the South Central Pennsylvania Sickle Cell Council from 2009 to 2020, raising public awareness and resources for those impacted by the disease in 26 PA counties.
He also serves the community as President of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Institute, a local think tank that develops community leaders trained in Dr. King’s tenets. In 2008, Joe authored a book titled “7 Leadership Imperatives from a Wild Man.” Over 3,000 people have been trained in Robinson’s leadership model outlined in the book.
Joe retired from the PA Department of Transportation after 26 years of service, last serving in a senior management position as Chief of the Performance Improvement and Metrics Division.
A recipient of the District Award of Merit in 2021, Joe serves on the Harrisburg Public Schools Foundation and the NAACP Executive Committee.
Joe is a 2011 graduate of Leadership Harrisburg’s 25th Anniversary class and he is an ordained elder deacon of The Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church since 1986 and has served in numerous capacities, including the first Director of Ministries for 70 ministries of the church.
