Information for Merit Badge Counselors

Becoming a Merit Badge Counselor:

  1. Complete the Required Paperwork:
    • BSA Merit Badge Counselor Form: Download
    • BSA Adult Application (code 42): Download
    • Attach a copy of your current Youth Protection Training Certificate.
    • Provide up-to-date PA State Clearances if not on file. More information here.
  2. Submit the Paperwork:
    • Send the completed forms to the council office for processing. Your position will be valid until the end of the year and will need renewal.
    • Consider making a copy of the forms before submission. Submit forms by mail or upload them here.

Renewal:

  • Yearly Renewal: Watch for an email in October about continuing as a merit badge counselor. Follow the instructions in the email to renew your role.

Additional Information:

  • Shooting Sports Merit Badges: Requires additional approvals. Contact Todd Weidner at todd.weidner@scouting.org for details.
  • Certifications: Pages 42 and 43 of the Guide to Advancement detail other required certifications for certain merit badges.
  • Citizenship in Society Merit Badge: Counselors must complete the BSA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training available on my.scouting.org. This 30-minute training ensures counselors understand the necessary terms and concepts.
