Nova Awards Overview
The Nova Awards program, developed by the Boy Scouts of America, aims to ignite a sense of wonder in Scouts through STEM exploration. Scouts work with a registered Nova counselor or mentor to engage with basic STEM principles and discover their fascination with these fields.
Types of Awards
- Nova Awards
- Purpose: Introduce Scouts to basic STEM concepts.
- Requirements: Scouts can complete these awards with guidance from a registered Nova counselor. The completed award must be logged in Scoutbook Plus or Scoutbook.
- Recognition: Upon earning their first Nova award, Scouts receive a Nova Emblem. Subsequent awards are recognized with a Pi pin.
- Purchase: Nova Award patches and pins are available from Class B and Crown Awards.
- Supernova Awards
- Purpose: For Scouts seeking advanced challenges in STEM.
- Requirements: Complete the Supernova Award Application, obtain required signatures, and submit to the council service center.
- Review Process: Applications are reviewed by the Council Supernova Coordinator and may take up to 45 days (Cub Scouts) or 60 days (Scouts BSA and Venturers). Submit a copy of the advancement report and supporting documentation, such as project data, experiment photos, and workbooks.
- Approval and Purchase: After approval, units are informed and can purchase Supernova medals here. Certificates will be provided by the council.
Becoming a Counselor or Mentor
- Nova Counselor
- Requirements:
- Complete BSA Adult Application
- Provide Youth Protection Training and PA State Clearances (if not already registered)
- Requirements:
- Supernova Mentor
- Requirements:
- Age 21 or older
- Expertise in a STEM field
- Complete BSA Adult Application and Supernova Mentor Application
- Provide Youth Protection Training and PA State Clearances (if not already registered)
- Requirements:
Renewal
- Process: Watch for a renewal email in October. Follow the instructions to continue as a Nova Counselor or Supernova Mentor.
